Local keyword research identifies the specific search queries that people in your target geographic area use to find businesses like yours. Local keywords differ from general keywords in one critical way: they include location signals — either explicit ("dentist Austin TX") or implicit ("dentist near me", where Google uses the searcher's location). Finding and targeting the right local keywords is the foundation of both local pack ranking and organic local search visibility.

Problem/symptom queries: "burst pipe repair near me", "toothache emergency dentist" — users searching for a problem rather than a service type. These often trigger the local pack for the relevant service business category and convert at high rates.

Step 1 — Seed Keywords From Your Services

Start with a complete list of every service you offer. For each service, generate three types of keyword:

  1. The service name + your primary city: "service city"
  2. The service name + major neighbourhoods or suburbs you serve
  3. Problem/symptom variations: "what to do when [problem]", "[problem] repair near me"

Example seed list for a plumbing business in Austin:

  • "plumber Austin" — head term
  • "plumber South Austin", "plumber Round Rock" — neighbourhood variants
  • "burst pipe repair Austin" — service variant
  • "water heater installation Austin" — specific service

This seed list is your starting point. Every keyword on it should eventually map to a specific page on your site — the mapping step comes later.

Step 2 — Expand With Google Autocomplete and PAA

Search each seed keyword in Google and note three data sources:

Autocomplete suggestions — the dropdown that appears as you type reflects real queries with real volume. For "plumber Austin", you might see "plumber Austin TX", "plumber Austin emergency", "plumber Austin cheap". Each suggestion is a keyword variant worth recording.

People Also Ask — the expandable question boxes in the SERP surface question-format variants worth targeting in FAQ sections on your landing pages or in dedicated blog posts. "How much does a plumber cost in Austin?" can drive qualified informational traffic.

Related searches — the section at the bottom of the SERP often surfaces hyperlocal variants (specific neighbourhoods, landmarks, "near [area]") that confirm real search volume for sub-areas you may not have considered.

For local searches specifically, Google's autocomplete regularly surfaces hyperlocal neighbourhood variants that confirm which sub-areas have enough search volume to justify dedicated pages.

Step 3 — GSC for Existing Local Data

If your site is connected to Google Search Console, the Performance report is one of the most underused sources of local keyword data. Filter it as follows:

  1. Open Search Console → Performance → Search results
  2. Add filter: Country → your target country
  3. Set Search type → Web
  4. Sort the Queries tab by Impressions (descending)

Queries containing your city name or "near me" variants are your existing local keyword impressions. What to look for:

Positions 5–20: queries where Google has already associated your site with the topic, but you haven't broken into the top 5. These are your highest-leverage optimisation targets — you have the relevance signal; you need more authority and stronger on-page signals to rank higher.

Low impressions with good CTR: local variants that appear rarely but convert strongly when they do. These may be worth dedicated landing pages to increase impression share.

Queries you don't have a page for: if GSC shows impressions for "emergency plumber Austin" but you have no page targeting that phrase, Google is showing your homepage for it — a poor match. Create a dedicated page.

Step 4 — Analyse Competitor Local Pages

Search your top 3 primary service keywords in Google from your target location (use an incognito window to reduce personalisation effects):

  1. Look at the top 5 organic results — ignore the local pack for now
  2. Click each page — what does the H1 say? What keyword is in the title tag?
  3. Check the URL structure — do they use /[city]/[service]/ or /[service]-[city]/?
  4. Note any local landing page patterns: separate city pages, service-plus-city combinations, neighbourhood pages

This analysis reveals which exact keyword combinations are winning rankings, whether a single page or multiple dedicated pages are sufficient to compete, and what content depth the category demands. A competitor ranking with a 300-word page signals a low-competition keyword; a competitor ranking with a 2,000-word comprehensive guide signals you'll need to match that depth.

Step 5 — Map Keywords to Pages

Each local keyword should be assigned to a specific page. The standard mapping for a local service business:

Homepage: one primary service + main city — "plumber Austin". Do not try to rank the homepage for every service and city combination.

Service pages: one page per major service, targeting "[specific service] [city]" — "water heater installation Austin", "drain cleaning Austin". These pages target higher-intent, service-specific queries.

Location landing pages (for multi-location or service-area businesses): one page per service-area combination — "plumber South Austin", "plumber Round Rock". Each page targets the hyperlocal variant with locally relevant content.

Blog posts: informational local queries — "how much does a plumber cost in Austin", "best time to service AC in Texas heat". These build topical authority and capture mid-funnel searchers before they reach purchase intent.

Never target two pages with the same primary keyword — that creates keyword cannibalization, where Google must choose between your own pages. The result is both pages ranking lower than a single well-optimised page would.

Local Keyword Difficulty Assessment

National keyword difficulty scores from tools like Ahrefs or Semrush reflect domain authority competition globally. For local keywords, what matters is what's ranking in your specific city's SERP, not global difficulty. Assess local difficulty directly:

Open an incognito browser window (or use a local rank tracker set to your target city) and search the keyword. Look at the organic positions 1–5:

  • What is the domain authority of each ranking page? (Check with a browser extension or toolbar)
  • How much locally-specific content does each page have?
  • Are the top results large national directories (Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor) or local business pages?

Then look at the local pack (maps results): how many reviews do the top 3 businesses have? How complete are their GBP profiles? How close are they geographically to the city centre?

A keyword with a "difficulty 35" tool score may be practically impossible for organic position 1 if positions 1–3 are all large directory sites — though winning a local pack spot is a separate challenge that depends on your GBP signals rather than website authority. A keyword with "difficulty 50" may be winnable if the top organic results are weak local pages without dedicated content.

Tip: For multi-location businesses, run this difficulty check in each target city separately. The competitive landscape for "dentist Chicago" and "dentist Austin" may look completely different — Chicago may require substantially more content depth and authority to crack the top 5.
