Step 1 — Audit Existing Pages and Their Keywords

For each page on your site:

  1. Pull the page URL from your sitemap or a crawl (the SEO Analyzer exports a full page list)
  2. Search the page's topic in Google and look at the top-ranking results — what keyword are they optimised for?
  3. Check GSC Performance → Pages → click the page → Queries tab: what query sends the most impressions? That's likely the primary keyword Google is already associating with the page
  4. Record the primary keyword and top 3–5 secondary keywords for each page

This step often surfaces cannibalization immediately — two pages sending traffic from the same query in GSC is a clear signal.

Step 2 — Identify Keyword Cannibalization

Sort your keyword map by primary keyword. Any duplicate primary keywords are cannibalization candidates.

Confirm with GSC: filter Performance by the keyword in question — do multiple pages appear with significant impressions? If yes, Google is splitting its ranking between those pages.

  • Consolidate: Merge the weaker page into the stronger one (301 redirect after migration)

Step 3 — Find Content Gaps

Content gaps are valuable keywords with no page in your map. These are your highest-priority content opportunities.

Process:

  2. For each keyword found, check your map — is any existing page targeting this keyword?
  3. If no — add it to the gap list with volume and difficulty
  4. Prioritise gaps by: (volume × relevance) ÷ difficulty

Search intent determines what type of content to create for each keyword:
