For YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics — health, finance, legal, safety — this requirement is stringent: Google's quality rater guidelines explicitly require verifiable credentials or professional recognition. For non-YMYL topics, demonstrated expertise through the depth and accuracy of the content itself carries more weight than credentials alone.
Authoritativeness is measured by whether the site and author are cited, referenced, and recognised by others in the same field. This is where backlinks, brand mentions, Wikipedia presence, and third-party citations intersect with E-E-A-T. An authoritative source is one that others point to — not one that claims authority in its own About page.
Trustworthiness is the most foundational dimension — Google's documentation describes it as the most important of the four. A trustworthy site is transparent about who runs it and what their interests are: clear About and Contact pages, editorial policies, affiliate disclosures, author bylines that link to verifiable profiles, and no hidden conflicts of interest.
What No Longer Matters (or Never Did)
As important as understanding what works is understanding what to stop spending time on. These are the ranking factors most commonly repeated in SEO content that have no confirmed effect — or have been explicitly debunked by Google.
Meta keywords tag — Google removed this from its algorithm in 2009 and has confirmed multiple times since that it is not used at all. Adding it wastes development time and, more importantly, hands competitors a view of your keyword strategy for free.
Keyword density — Google has confirmed that word count and keyword density are not ranking signals. Writing with a target keyword density of 1–2% is cargo-culting from a 2005 SEO playbook. Write naturally for the reader; keyword repetition emerges naturally from covering a topic thoroughly.
Exact-match domains — The EMD update in 2012 eliminated most ranking advantage from keyword-exact domain names. bestcheapflightsusa.com does not rank better than expedia.com because of its domain name. Brand authority, content quality, and backlinks determine rankings — not whether the domain contains a target keyword.
Social signals — Google has explicitly stated that social shares, likes, and follower counts are not ranking factors. The reason is practical: Google cannot reliably crawl the majority of social networks at scale, and social metrics are trivially gameable. The correlation between high social shares and high rankings exists because both are caused by a third factor — high-quality content that earns both links and shares.
Meta description — Not a ranking factor. Google confirmed this. Meta descriptions do directly affect SERP click-through rate (a well-written description increases clicks), which may have indirect ranking effects over time — but the text itself is not parsed as a ranking signal.
